Toronto Plays Home to a Brand New Dinner Theatre (Candyland)

There’s no shortage of quality restaurants in the Toronto area, but when it comes to dinner theatre, there isn’t exactly a specific venue that you would keep in mind. Well, seeing as there is an abundance of food attractions to choose from all over King West, it’s nice to introduce something brand new. Candyland is a dinner theatre project that’s looking to change the way people look at King West. It’s going to remind you of other relatable locations, such as “The Box” in Manhattan, or even the “Cirque le Soir” in London. These are locations that are well-renowned and sought out, which means this addition to Toronto could mean quite a bit. Throughout the night, you’re going to be graced with three or four separate performances. Each one will be around 10 to 15 minutes a piece, and will cover a variety of different topics and platforms. Some of these are going to be circus acts (like a ring dancer), or even just a blues band playing a quick song – sketches are also a very big part of the entertainment schedule.

Candyland is a concept that we haven’t exactly seen in Toronto before, which makes it something interesting to check out. It’ll draw in a crowd on a nightly basis, and if the food is as good as they say, it should be a location that sticks around for a long time. It may even become a crucial part of the local Toronto community! The option of having live entertainment available while you eat isn’t open all too often, so it’s a cool thing to experience when you dine at Candyland.

The food is going to be just as important as the entertainment, which is why Chef Frank Parhizgar (whom is the mastermind behind “Franks Kitchen”) will create a menu that consists of luxurious snacks and smaller plates. The cover price is $20, and the cost of food as well; of which is served until relatively late! If this is something you think you’d enjoy, check out Candyland at their new location on 619 King St. W!

Maizal Quesadilla Café

Maizal Quesadilla Café (mostly just referred to as “Maizal”) is a Mexican café, located on 133 Jefferson Ave in Toronto. The location falls within Liberty Village, a popular and growing community within the city. Maizal is an interesting Mexican restaurant, providing a comfortable and homelike vibe for you to take in. The shade-covered patio area is a nice touch, and allows you to take in all that summer has to offer during the middle months. The space itself is wondrous, using warm colors to keep you happy and ready to eat! There are tons of pots and such that keep it filled, as well as plants and other things of that nature. Not only that, but there’s even folk art on the walls to admire as well! Owned by Ivan Wadgymar and Gabriela Ituarte, this is one of those restaurants that you want to experience over and over. If it isn’t the delicious Mexican dishes that they’re providing, it’s the atmosphere itself. The menu is somewhat small, only standing at a dozen or so dishes, but it’s the passion and ingredients that make everything so amazing.

The entire menu is made from scratch, and that’s why the food is well-reviewed. If you’re a fan of freshly made corn tortillas, you’re really in for a treat! They only offer up service during certain times of the day at the moment, but we hope that they increase that number sometime soon. Some of the neat things they offer would be:

  • Delivery
  • Takeout
  • Patio Seating (Shaded!)
  • Wine and Beer
  • Free Wi-Fi!
  • Vegetarian-Friendly Dishes

Mexican Food in Toronto: Done Right!

They definitely deliver on the promise of fantastic food, and the reviews that precede this one will talk about that as well. Whether you go with some churros, a quesadilla or just a good old-fashioned taco; you’re going to be happy. Trust me on that one, the food is just so good! You know what they say, good food brings on a good mood. If you’re dying to try a new take on Mexican dishes within the Toronto area, feel free to check out Maizal Quesadilla Café.

Joker Café

Seeking a Mediterranean-style restaurant to sink your teeth into? Toronto is known for providing a plethora of different food cultures to choose from, and Joker Café is trying to bring their own little presence to the table. Mediterranean food is fantastic, and Joker Café is offering up a complete menu (filled to brim with Serbian foods and beverages). It’s located in Liberty Village (165 Dufferin St.), and they’ve managed to perfect the approach taken when preparing European dishes. If you want to taste what the other side of the world likes, but don’t want to spend a lot of money on a plane ticket, Joker Café is the way to go. They offer up a very delectable schnitzel, as well as ravioli – the menu is full of amazing items to pick from. The staff is as friendly as they come, which ensures that your experience is going to be an awesome one. The ambience is nice, and that’s pretty much 25% of the issues you’re going to have with a restaurant (the other 25% and 50% being service and food, respectively).

When I went for a bite to eat at Joker Café, I noticed that the staff was almost too nice. They were quick and consistent when it came to taking my order, and they never gave me any attitude – the way that restaurant servers/waitresses should always be! Authenticity is always going to be brought into question, especially when you’re saying that you provide 100% Serbian dishes. The name “Joker Café” is a little misleading, as it doesn’t sound like somewhere you would find classical Serbian dishes at all – but it definitely does!

Is It an Enjoyable Experience?

This is going to vary from person to person, obviously. If you’re a big fan of Serbian dishes, I highly suggest checking out this restaurant (they also have a bar!). It’s the perfect atmosphere for when you want to have a small family get-together, or even just a romantic night out for two. All of the food is prepared in-house, as that’s the only way to ensure that every single dish tastes as fresh as possible. If you’re interested in catering, they can also help you out with that.

Vogue Supperclub (FORTY2 Supperclub)

Looking for somewhere to get a little bit of food, but also party a little bit? Well, obtaining the best of both worlds definitely isn’t easy – but Vogue Supperclub is trying to make it so! They really tried to bring it when it comes to both atmosphere and decoration, but the nightclub portion of this place is pretty great. Not only can you find yourself eating a delicious dinner, but you could even go out for a few drinks afterwards (and you wouldn’t need to travel very far!). It’s located in the heart of Liberty Village, which is a pretty popular community amongst residents in Toronto. As a result, you’re going to come across a plethora of different cultures when you visit the nightclub – that’s what makes Toronto such a great place! They’ve just gone about releasing a brand new lunch menu, which is sure to sway people’s opinions when it comes to how good their food can be. They offer up reserve dinners, bottle service and even a guest-list service for special events (nightclub related, of course).

Some people have said that they have had a bad experience when it comes to this club, which is why the name-change went down. Changing the name was a good way to go about starting fresh, but it really feels like they may have fallen short on the service aspect.

How Good Was It?

At the end of it all, I can’t complain about anything too serious – but the turnout for the club was a little lackluster. I’m used to clubbing with young professionals and such, but this particular night may have been a bust. There are a lot of opportunities for parking (and it’s free!), which is a huge plus in Toronto. Finding parking is a problem, especially when you have to pay most of the time. If you can deal with the fact that not a lot of people may turn out for your night, it’s a solid option.

Others have exclaimed that the location is a little lackluster, as it isn’t really in the heart of the city (and not even really in a good spot amongst Liberty Village restaurants). The staff needs some work as well, as the service was more than just disappointing – I’ve even heard stories of people just not even receiving a plate of food at all!

Discover A Liberty Village Bistro Worth Shouting About

Liberty Village has no shortage of great places to grab a delicious and nutritious bite to eat. That’s one of the great things about living and working in the neighbourhood. If you’ve ben here for a while, you’ve probably discovered one or two favourites. I’d like to introduce to you one of my personal faves: Merci Mon Ami.

First established in 2007, Merci Mon Ami is a trendy neighbourhood bistro that’s a great meeting spot for lunch in Liberty Village.

Merci Mon Ami is licensed and offers a selection of beers on tap and in bottles, as well as their house wines.

A Warm And Inviting Environment

An indoor dining space with two large communal tables provides a friendly and hip vibe, while the front patio offers alfresco dining option during the summer months.

Lavelle: Toronto’s Brand New Rooftop Restaurant & Pool Lounge!

There are a lot of nifty attractions that are a part of Toronto’s vibrant community, but the LAVELLE is a brand new one that might have you turning your head for a second look. Freed Developments and Trademark Hospitality Inc. are the masterminds behind this project, and they managed to pick a seemingly perfect location. Located within the center of the King West Neighoburhood, LAVELLE is a rooftop pool lounge and bar/restaurant that has a whopping 16,000 square feet to work with. It’s essentially paradise in the sky! They offer up the classiest hospitality, designs and even cuisine around; the views are something to love quite a bit as well. The pool is 155-feet in length, making it one of the longest rooftop pools you can find in North America. As if that wasn’t enough, a portion of the pool can be covered and turned into a walkway!

Peter Freed made it so that the LAVELLE would co-exist on top of his already popular condo development, which would be the 629 King Residences. Freed has built well over 1,800 condo units within the King West area, some of which would include: Fashion House, 75 Portland and even 500 Wellington (and that’s only a few of them). Freed and his partner, Reza Abedi, came together and created Trademark Hospitality Inc. This was so they could bring the lifestyle hospitality regime to the forefront of Toronto, and it all begins with the LAVELLE. Rob Montemarana is a partner in this project as well, who is somebody that holds an abundance of experience (well over a decade) when it comes to the hospitality industry.

Whether you’re looking into a day or night trip to LAVELLE, you’re going to be pleasantly surprised. They wanted it to be an experience that only LAVELLE could provide, regardless of how hard competitors tried to mimic everything. Whether you want to relax in the sun with a cabana, or simply have yourself a nice night out with an elegant dinner – LAVELLE can help provide you with whatever you’d like. There’s fresh juice available in the garden at all times, as well as cocktail-based ice cream available as well (several flavours!).

5 Restaurants in Liberty Village to Add to Your List

Does your restaurant repertoire need an upgrade? Here are five restaurants you need to check out, that will surely make your list of ‘go-to’ spots in Liberty Village in Toronto. You will find a collection of diverse styles of restaurants, each with its own charms and eccentricities. Skillful culinary execution, impeccable service, and sustainability are all part of what makes these restaurants a must visit destination for your next culinary adventure.

1 – School

This breakfast/lunch/brunch spot is a local favourite that is sure to be yours too. Inventive take on a simple concept. This isn’t your typical diner. School brings the bacon and eggs, pancakes, waffles, and French toast, but they bring it with a funky schoolhouse twist. Local, Canadian ingredients are all over the menu, and they offer healthy options that you wouldn’t normally find in a ‘greasy spoon’ joint, like 101 Quinoa Chicken Bowl. This is a great spot for anyone venturing out of their Liberty Village apartment, looking for a satisfying meal.

2 – Mildred’s Temple Kitchen

Temple Kitchen focuses on locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, and has the pedigree from renowned Chef Donna Dooher to deliver outstanding food and service within walking distance of many Liberty Village condos. Mildred’s Temple Kitchen is the reincarnation of Mildred Pierce, the first restaurant in Toronto to make the warehouse district cool, and to bring the city brunch as a culinary trend, which is still alive and well today. Temple Kitchen is devoted to its philosophy of heartfelt food that pays respect to its source, and is dedicated to the freshness of every ingredient. MTK is one of the best restaurants in the city, not just Liberty Village.

3 – Williams Landing

Here is your next upscale casual dinner spot, perfect after a day of viewing new condos in Liberty Village. It has something for everyone on the menu, but still emphasizes local, organic, sustainable, and seasonal, which sets it apart from the chains. Set in a beautiful and stylish space, it is sure to keep its guests coming back. There is also a patio on the second floor for the beloved patio season in the city.

4 – Bugigattolo

This one is sure to become your favourite Liberty Village secret hang-out. A traditional southern Italian kitchen run by Chef Quin Josey, who earned his stripes in Rob Gentile’s Buca empire. This place specializes in breakfast, lunch, and sweets, with emphasis on grab-and-go items for a neighbourhood on the run, but with the warmth and charm of a place you want to settle into, and never leave. Fresh Italian cheeses, bread, and cured meats, along with serious attention to detail will make this place a favourite for many of Liberty Village apartment owners.

5 – Maizal

Keeping with authenticity, this place is so authentic; they pay homage to the life-blood of the Mayan people, Maize. At Maizal, the traditions of the Mayan kitchen are practiced in every way. Using heirloom seeds of corn, they mill, knead, and roll their own tortillas in keeping with traditional tortillerias in Mexico. Maizal is another scratch kitchen that prides itself on its rich cultural history and believes it is their job to defend it so that you can enjoy it.

Trendy, hip, and cool are typically fleeting, but with these five restaurants, they all should become mainstays for all Liberty Village condo residents. All of these joints have the philosophies that should keep them grounded and true to their roots. Liberty Village looks like it has some really great additions to the neighbourhood, and you should help make them permanent fixtures on your list of favourite spots to eat.
